When it comes to physical education, finding data and statistics has become more popular. With the growing obesity epidemic some districts and administrators are looking for results and proof that physical education does make a difference. Providing statistics and data of fitness testing and improvement of skills is one way to show evidence.
I have not used any of the statistic tools before, but I do plan on looking into them in the near future. In the past I have used Microsoft Excel to input data, but the various websites provided in the module are intriguing. The sports data site is a great way to look at statistics in various sports and teams. This would be beneficial for a coach to provide their athletes with information. At the moment some of the sites seem a bit overwhelming, but perhaps thats because I don't have a use for them at this time. When I need to analyze statistics I definitely plan on referring
When creating a professional portfolio, there are many different options. A personal website and LinkedIn are both ways to showcase your accomplishments, interact with others and create a professional page geared toward individual goals.
Creating a personal website can be very beneficial to an individual. With the use of sites such as weebly, it is fairly easy to create the site using the templates provided and following the how to guide. With this site you can upload anything you want such as; resumes, videos, pictures, blogs, updates etc. You can also create links to other sites such as your email, LinkedIn, Facebook page, business or others. Using a personal website is a way to get information out to large amounts of people with the click of the publish button. A negative of having a personal website is actually getting the site out for people to see it. It could be difficult to advertise your website or make large amounts of people aware of your site unless you individually tell them about it. It is not as easy to search for an individual site as it is to just type a persons nam
LinkedIn is another site that can be used as a professional portfolio. With LinkedIn you can basically create an online resume with credentials, certificates, interests and job history. A positive of using LinkedIn is the ability to network with just about anyone that has an account. This creates a whole world of professional resources that might either be in the same field or have similar interests. It is a great way to connect with people from the past or even new people you would like to meet. Although there are many positives to using LinkedIn, there are also some negatives. Sometimes people may connect with you on LinkedIn that you don't really want to connect with. With the ability to find just about everyone that has an account, this might be an issue for some people. Another issue for some people could be the maintenance aspect. Once you create your profile it is not the end step. You should update your profile with any additional credentials or changes. This could end up being time consuming.
Overall both a personal website and LinkedIn are both great ways to create a professional profile. Both options are what you make of them; the more you put in to it, the more you get out of it.
In order to get places in life, you need to network. Networking is highly necessary wether you are trying to find a job, meet others in your profession, generate business, market yourself or any other professional need. In today's world unfortunately sometimes it is all about who you know when it comes to finding a job. The more people you know, the more people there are that have your back.
There are many ways to network, the use of technology makes networking even easier. Personally, I would rather meet people in person and have a conversation face to face. Sometimes, there just isn't the time to meet or if the person lives on the other side of the country it is not possible. Luckily there are different ways to network online. LinkedIn is a great way to network with individuals in your field. Creating a profile with your interests and your job can connect you with many others in common. A LinkedIn can also double as an online resume for others to see. Facebook is also another way to network, whether it is with friends from the past or someone you just met a meeting the day before. I can't think of how many times I thought to myself, I wonder what so and so is doing for a career now? If that person has a Facebook or a LinkedIn, you can usually look on there to find out. People need to be careful using Facebook as professional networking. Anything on a Facebook account is there for others to see, personally I would rather not mix business with pleasure and keep my personal life separate.
As far as networking in person goes, take every opportunity to meet anyone that you can! I enjoy meeting new people, you never know what you might have in common with them and how you could help each other out in your careers. As a health and physical education teacher, I like to meet other teachers and bounce ideas off of each other for new games and activities. Also, with coaching two sports it is always great to meet other coaches and hear their coaching philosophies and drills that they use. One thing to keep in mind when meeting someone is first impressions are lasting, so make a good first impression because you never know who that person may turn out to be that you are meeting!
A wiki is a website that allows individuals to edit and add their own information. This can be beneficial when working on a group project. Different group members can access the wiki and provide their own input. With the large number of online classes, wikis can be a useful way to complete a group project since meeting in person is usually not possible. Teachers can also post information on a wiki and students can respond or provide feedback. Since anyone can edit a wikispace, there is a chance that the information found might not all be reliable. However, there are ways to change security settings on a wiki and allow only certain individuals to edit your site. Creating a wiki also seems fairly simple based on the directions provided on the website. Editing a wiki and adding new information can also be done easily making it simple to share with others. I can definitely see why the use of wiki's is growing and is definitely s
At first glance, Facebook and LinkedIn may seem like similar sites. They both allow us to network with other people and create our own page based on interests. It is fairly easy to find people on both sites by typing in their name in the search tab. After looking around on the two sites I did notice a few differences. While LinkedIn seems to be more geared towards individuals that are professionals and either have jobs or are searching for jobs, Facebook seems to attract almost anyone. Younger people are more attracted to Facebook, middle school, high school and college students generally will appeal more to Facebook than LinkedIn as there isn't much of a use for a LinkenIn as a high school student. LinkedIn is more of a site for adults, and can be used to either network with other professionals, search for jobs or for jobs to search for you. For people that like to keep their social life and their professional life separate, LinkedIn seems like a better choice. With LinkedIn, people can upload their resume and other certifications, this is not something that I have seen on Facebook. Each site has its own benefits and drawbacks, it just depends what the user is looking for.
Among all of the apps out there in the world are education apps. With the constant growing of technology and amount of people using smart phones and iPads, I see the need for more apps to grow. I can definitely picture apps becoming part of the classroom in the near future. There are a lot of really cool educational apps that I have never heard of before, but after researching and reading about the different apps theres an app for just about everything! One of the apps that I thought looked interesting on the 20 Amazing iPad Apps for Teachers site was the Class Dojo. This app allows teachers to manage student behavior from their phone or computer by giving feedback as positive or negative points with a simple click. I think this app is beneficial because it can help eliminate some of the class time that is spent correcting behavior and classroom management. Students can immediately see how they are doing which provides them instant feedback. Class Messenger and Remind 101 are also great ways to communicate with students and parents. I like the idea of keeping parents in the loop by using the app and connecting with multiple parents and students at once using something other than email. Class Messenger has a lot of beneficial features such as scheduling meetings with parents, sending permission slips and communicating students needs. The remind 101 app allows teachers to send messages to students or parents without actually using anyones cell phone number. This would be great to remind students or parents of homework assignments due or other important classroom announcements. I look forward to trying some of the apps out and hopefully using them as a classroom tool this c
After looking through the list of the Top 100 Tools for Learning, I was surprised with how many of the tools I already use. Even if I haven't used some of the tools, I have at least heard of them before. I plan to start using a lot more of the tools in my health classes next school year. I would like to make a site for my health class so they can find out information about the class and use it as a resource. I also think the Survey Monkey would be fun to use in health as a type of pre assessment or survey before covering different topics to see where the class stands. Doodle seems like a great source if I have to schedule meetings where multiple people would be attending to find a common time. I look forward to use the sites and found this article to be very beneficial!
Check out this Tough Mudder clip. I have participated in 3 Tough Mudders and keep going back for more!
In the short time that I have been taking the technology class, I have learned a lot! Many of the new technology sites and skills I have learned I plan on incorporating into my career.
I now know how to create a website/ blog. This is something that would be beneficial to create as a class page for my students to find out important information. I could also post discussion topics and have my students comment for homework. The photo fun also is something I can use to spice up my current powerpoints and make them a little more appealing to the eye. The web 2.0 also had some pretty cool sites that I would like to try out such as the goal setting site and TED Ed.
Although I was familiar with using the internet and technology prior to this course, I am learning many new things. I feel more comfortable using technology as well. Prior to the course I didn't have a twitter account and didn't really see the big deal with Twitter. I know enjoy reading other peoples posts and Twitter and think it is a really cool concept. This class has opened up my eyes to new thoughts and
